Professional Skills

Chris Godwin

CEO / Director

Curtin University Degree in Small Business Growth Management
Certificate IV in Assessment and Training.
Open Water Scuba Diving Instructor in FAUI, NASDS, PADI and CMAS
Various computer courses and life courses.

I am CEO at Flowers Design School and my responsibilities include; financial controls, marketing, statistical controls, human resources, lecturing in retail & management skills specific to the floristry industry, national and international seminars on retail and management skills specific to the floristry industry, managing the present and future goals of the business and the team. Implementation of new systems and procedures, assisting the team to explore and achieve their full potential, responsible for diversification of new products and services, management of all assets and intellectual property.

Background
Began working when I was 12 years old on summer school holidays in 1975 at the Midland sale yards (a central depot for buying and selling of livestock). Had many part time jobs including station hand, farm hand, green keeper, skin & hide sheds, night clubs, events security, tour guide and tour operator until 1982 when I finally achieved my primary goal; the scuba diving industry.

I have been in retail, client relations and management since 1982. I have owned various businesses since 1984 including; Australasian Diving Centre (scuba diving), Ocean Earth and Air (scuba diving tours) and Flowers and Unique Designs (specialist in corporate and wedding functions and internet ordering).

Teaching/lecturing has featured highly in my working life and I owe a lot of this to my scuba diving background as this is a situation when people are at their most vulnerable. This taught me a lot about peoples thought processes, body language and emotions. The most valuable lesson the scuba diving industry taught me was the ability to get important information across to people of all ages and gender using humour and life story’s that everyone can relate to; but more importantly to actually get them to do things they thought they could never do.

Business and Life Moto's
  • You shouldn’t walk away from negative people, you should run.
  • Cash flow is king.
  • Look after the team and the team will look after everything else.
  • Nothing is more important than my family.
